The ministries of education and cultural affairs are the supreme authorities at Land level with respect to education, science and culture. Their work includes, above all, schools, higher education and adult education, the general preservation of art and culture, and relations between the state and religious communities (known as Kultusangelegenheiten). The majority of the Länder, in addition to a ministry for schools, also have separate ministries to cover science and research.
