Von der Mathildenhöhe, die 1899 als Künstlerkolonie gegründet wurde, gingen zahlreiche Impulse für Architektur, Kunst und Design aus, die die Moderne prägen sollten. Sie ist die bisher 48. UNESCO-Welterbestätte in Deutschland.
